PICKLEBALL

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddleball sport that integrates the components badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Two or four players use solid wooden or composite fiber paddles to hit a perforated ball over a net. Pickleball is played on a regulation doubles badminton court. The net is hung at 36 inches at both ends and dips to 34 inches at center.

How do you play pickleball?

Serve:

  • Servers arm must be directing the paddle in an upward arc

  • The paddle must be below the waist when when contacting the ball on the serve

  • The highest part of the paddle can not be higher that the server’s wrist

Scoring:

  • Points are scored on the serve. The receiving side can’t score points

  • At beginning of match, right side (even court) player serves to the diagonally opposite court

  • The server moves to the left side (odd court) and serves to the diagonally opposite court if a point is scored

  • Players on the serving side move from right to left or left to right each time a point is scored

  • Players on the serving team do not alternate sides unless a point is scored. The receiving side never alternates sides

  • The first server continues to serve until the serving team loses a rally by committing a fault; then the serve passes to the second server on the team

  • When the second server loses the serve, the serve goes to the other team and the player on the right serves first.

  • This pattern continues throughout the game

How did pickleball start?

Pickleball began during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Joel Pritchard, who became a congressman and lieutenant governor, were unable to set up a badminton game. They improvised with a waffle ball, lowered the net, and manufactured paddles from plywood sheets.

CLIFTON COVE

Green with anticipation
Almost two months had passed since the day the Villager asked an attendant at Ezell when the putting course would open. “It looks like there’s still a lot of work to do on those greens.” The attendant said then hesitated. “The grounds keeper says one to two months.”
Not the answer the villager wanted to hear.

Preparation
The villager went on  the internet and researched putting. Stance with knees bent slightly; grip with thumb aligned with the shaft; head down, eyes focused on the ball and striking face of the club. Every practice swing emulating a pendulum. All that without a club and a ball. The villager concentrated on angles and fundamentals in his living room.

On the green
Opening day had come. When the villager drive by Clifton Cove putting course and saw the people on the greens he made up his mind to be on the course the next morning.
He couldn’t start earlier than 9 AM. He needed to borrow a club and ball at the rec center. The villager went with a straight backed right hander.
On the first hole, the villager realized the Zen of the game. Tuned in to the path from his eyeballs to the ball on the ground and setting the club head on the line connecting the ball to the hole.
The course was challenging. The villager needed a lot of practice.
